There’s a lot of talk about the many benefits people enjoy when they make the switch from smoking regular tobacco cigarettes to vaping electronic cigarettes, but did you know these changes can start immediately?
Keep reading for a timeline that shows you just what happens to your body when you make the switch from smoking to vaping.
8 HOURS
Almost immediately you quit smoking, your body will start improving! Within 8 hours the amount of oxygen in your blood will begin to return to normal levels, even if you are already vaping.
The vapour produced by your electronic cigarette doesn’t contain any carbon monoxide, unlike tobacco cigarettes. This means your body can start to get rid of the carbon monoxide you had previously inhaled and there is more space for oxygen in your blood, which as every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs oxygen, is definitely a good thing!
24 HOURS
Within 24 hours of quitting smoking and starting vaping, all the residual carbon monoxide in your system will be gone. Your lungs will begin to repair and heal themselves, removing toxic debris and mucus that had accumulated there whilst you were smoking.
48 HOURS
Around this time, you might notice that your sense of taste has improved, so foods and drinks will be even more enjoyable. Also, your sense of smell will become keener, so you will be able to register a wider range of smells, that you were missing out on when you were smoking. We can’t promise that they will all be pleasant, but we our senses have important functions and better to have them working well!
This is all possible because your body will be able to begin repairing the receptors within your mouth and your nose, damaged by the toxins in the tobacco cigarettes.
72 HOURS
With incredible improvements in your body in only 48 hours, it should be no surprise that within three days, your body will be even stronger. Many people who switch to vaping report that they already notice an improvement in their breathing.
Which is not really surprising, as you are no longer clogging and irritating your bronchial tubes with tar and many, many other chemicals and toxins. As these tubes become relaxed and clear, former smokers notice their energy levels increase and breathing is easier.
3 TO 9 MONTHS
No smoking tobacco and by between 3 to 9 months, you should notice that wheezing, coughing, and shallow breathing have reduced in severity or gone away.
Lung function has been able to improve as your body has been given a break from constant assault by tar, toxins, chemicals and the effect of carbon monoxide, whilst having the benefit of increased oxygen.
5 YEARS
Five years after quitting smoking tobacco and your risk of having a heart attack will have been reduced by about 50%. The longer you go without smoking, the lower your risk will become. And if you have been vaping, you need not worry because vapour produced by e-cigs is at least 95% less harmful than smoking. (Public Health England Study)
10 YEARS
By 10 years, your lung cancer risk will also have dropped by about 50%, from when you were smoking tobacco. Your risk of heart attack is also reduced to roughly the same as that of someone who never smoked.
You have avoided 10 years of tar, chemicals, toxins, carcigens and carbon monoxide!
And if you are still using nicotine-containing e-liquid, the effects on nicotine on the heart are only similar to those of caffeine.

KEEP GOING!
The longer you steer clear of tobacco cigarettes, the more you will notice your health improve, not to mention your skin, hair, nails, breath, as well as senses of taste and smell!
Your body will thank you for quitting – not to mention the positive effect on your wallet!
AND, not only will the people around you no longer be exposed to the harmful smoke that you used to produce with your cigarettes, you have a much better chance of being around longer for the people who care about you.
