You CAN do it!
7 Tips For Giving Up Smoking
Qutting smoking is tough, nobody denies that and anybody who says it’s easy … was never really a smoker! But you CAN do it and there are things that you can do for yourself that will help …
7.Think of those you love … and more importantly who love you …
This is a harsh and hard hitting truth …your own self interest should be a good enough incentive to quit, but we are adults and smoking is legal and we aren’t always good to ourselves … but if you can’t do it for yourself, think of the mothers, fathers, partners, children, siblings and friends of the 16 people who die of smoking related illnesses in Ireland every day. Think of your own family, friends and colleagues … don’t a memory.
6. Think of your looks!
From only a few hours after your last cigarette positive changes start happening in our bodies and one of the first places you see it is in your skin. More oxygen getting through makes your skin smoother, softer to touch, more elasticity means those wrinkles around your mouth and nose are plumped out, skin is brighter, your teeth and fingers will be less stained and you will smell better!
5. The 6-week rule
According to ‘The Power of Habit’, it takes about 6 weeks to make or break a new habit – that isn’t a long time, its doeable and you CAN do it!
4. Jump back in!
If you stumble and have a fag, don’t worry, don’t beat yourself up – think about ALL the cigarettes you haven’t smoked, ALL the money you have already saved, pat yourself on the back for the good you have done and KEEP GOING! You WILL get there, but only if you CARRY ON!
3. A problem shared …quit together!
Find someone to quit smoking with you. We all know the saying, “misery loves company” but how many of us are aware of the rest of the quote? “Triumph demands an audience!” Share the driving and the journey will be shorter and less tiring and you will have someone around to celebrate at the end with!
2. Cold turkey is for Christmas!
Getting rid of a bad habit and making a new one is so doable, BUT your body will still crave nicotine – it’s a drug, if quitting wasn’t tough, you probably would have done it already. Make it easier for yourself, especially in the first few weeks - have a look at supports and options - read about Hale Vaping and see if it’s for you, it’s really worth remembering … studies have shown that Vaping is 70% more successful than other Nicotine Replacement Therapies, i.e. patches or chewing gum, so make a plan for yourself and get all the help that you might need.
1. Do something else!
As well as the addiction to nicotine, smoking is something we do with our hands! You saw the kids with their Fidget Cubes the other years, well you need a grown up Fidget Cube! Vaping is great because it copies the hand to mouth action, whilst still feeding the demand for nicotine and cutting out the harmful effects of tobacco, but there are lots of other things you can do - get up and move, go for a walk, watch something funny on YouTube – its called “Distraction Therapy” and basically it means anything that you use to take your mind off having a cigarette or keeps your hands busy!Where and how to buy
